Chiefly letters written by family and friends in Hartford, Conn., to Titus L. Bissell, Jr., a merchant with the Charleston, S.C., firm of Henry Loomis & Co. Letter, 5 Nov. 1820, Thomas G. Hart to Bissell, Charleston, S.C., re advertisment of Netley's Rememdy; and letter, 9 Nov. 1820, Hartford, Conn., from Benj[ami]n Bolles re his memories of seasonal street scenes in Charleston, S.C., "I suppose the Planters are now beginning to bring in their Rice & Cotton which makes business brisk... it was diverting to me to see them coming in riding one of the hind horses and eating their bread and cheese as they passed through the Streets and to See the negroes morning and evening carrying their corn Grit, milk, Oysters, raddishes, &c and crying them through the streets." Three letters from Titus L. Bissell, Jr., appear in collection, including letter, 18 July 1821, New York, N.Y., to Henry Loomis, Suffield, Conn., re quantities of stock on hand at Loomis' establishments in Charleston, S.C., and New York City; other family letters include correspondence from Bissell's younger brother, Henry Bissell, in New York, re his work as a clerk and temptations of city life.
